Largest bequest in University’s history to be invested in deep tech innovation

Toronto, ON June 3, 2024 – Canadian Friends of Bar-Ilan University (“CFBIU”), a non-profit dedicated to providing direct funding support from Canadians for Israel’s second largest and fastest growing academic institution Bar-Ilan University, announced a historical gift to fund future scientific innovation.

In his remarks during the University’s annual Board of Trustees meeting, Bar-Ilan President Professor Arie Zaban announced than an anonymous donor has gifted $260M to Bar-Ilan, the largest bequest ever to the university, and one of the largest donations ever made to an Israeli university.

The donor, a highly educated Jew based in North America, chose Bar-Ilan University as the research institution best able to undertake the great task of expanding science-based technological resilience in Israel.

“During his visits to Israel, this donor saw for himself the infrastructure Bar-Ilan built to harness scientific innovation,” said CFBIU CEO Randy Spiegel. “This transformative gift will enable Bar-Ilan to continue to lead the world with innovative solutions to complex problems.”

Professor Zaban shared that this gift will be invested in the development of “Deep Tech” fields, recruiting researchers in areas such as energy, the environment, cryptography, bio-convergence, quantum computing, AI, and natural language processing. Bar-Ilan will also take the lead in building advanced research laboratories, supporting advanced degree students, and creating state-of-the-art innovation hubs.

“This gift will enable us to start implementing our new vision for the future,” stated Professor Zaban. “Today, more than ever, Israel needs science-based technological resilience, the essential element of all future innovations. This is key to a thriving society and economy. Bar-Ilan is thrilled that this gift will allow us to make a meaningful investment in strengthening Israel’s technological resilience.”
