Help power BIU's Vision Clinics
A Vision For The Future
Your gift will help BIU students and staff improve – and even restore vision – for under-serviced local residents
For over two decades, Bar-Ilan University’s School of Optometry and Vision Science have operated several vision clinics to support underserviced communities:
- Eye Examination Clinic – offers comprehensive eye exams five days a week, under supervision of a rotation of teaching faculty in the School of Optometry and Vision Science.
- Vision Therapy Clinic – provides therapy and rehabilitation 3 days a week to people with eye-hand coordination issues and other vision-related problems.
- Low Vision Specialty Clinic – focuses primarily on the elderly, this clinic uses a variety of instruments and technologies to treat and correct low vision.
- Contact Lens Specialty Clinic – offers groundbreaking contact lens therapies for Albinos and patients suffering from myopia and keratoconus.
Most recently, the department deployed the innovative Mobile Vision Clinic to meet patients where they live.
Staffed entirely by volunteers, the Vision Clinic regularly goes out into the field, providing free vision tests and eye care, mainly for residents in under-serviced populations.
The communities served by BIU’s Vision Clinics include:
- Holocaust survivors
- Orphanages
- Boarding schools and youth hostels
- Assisted living and nursing homes
- Low-income communities
Under this model, everyone benefits – area residents are given a professional examination, the students gain valuable hands-on experience, and the entire staff can influence the quality of life of people in need.
In the wake of the October 7th attacks, BIU’s Vision Clinics greatly increased its level of activity to respond to the immediate need of the evacuees who fled their homes or otherwise could not receive proper care.
You gift will allow Bar-Ilan’s Optometry students and faculty the opportunity to acquire valuable skills while helping even more underserviced local residents.
Here’s how you can help today:
- A gift of $50,000 will fund the operation of the Mobile Clinic for one year.
- A gift of $19,000 will pay for a slit lamp with video system.
- A gift of $5,000 will fund the purchase of a Lensometer machine, which measures prepared contact lenses
Thanks to generous donors just like you, the mobile clinic was able to purchase an advanced “Retinomax” device for initial vision testing. This device is portable, small and specially adapted for use in the field – ideal for the mobile clinic that cannot travel with the usual heavy and cumbersome equipment.
With your support, BIU’s Mobile Vision Clinic can help BIU optometry students get the practical training they need while creating a positive impact for local communities in need.
